Configuring the System for Component Services
After you install Microsoft Windows, you must configure the system for Component Services. Configuration involves enabling administrator control for the System Application. It also includes configuring Component Services to recognize your network by making computers visible to Component Services and enabling component communication across machine boundaries by configuring distributed COM (DCOM). These configuration requirements are crucial to proper administration of Component Services.
Before You Continue
Depending on your system's needs, it might be necessary to perform configuration tasks beyond those described in the topics of this section. Although you may be able to configure the following properties at a later date, it is important to be aware of them early.
- The Component Services administrative tool requires the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC) service to be running, so you need to configure the DTC. For more information, see Administering Distributed Transactions.
- If enhancing system scalability is a goal for you, you can configure Component Services to shut down application processes that are not being used. For more information, see Setting the Server Process Shutdown.
